Chapter Nine

Rand managed to eke out three more pages that night, but he wasn’t very happy with them. He was really distracted. Bonnie, Susan and the kids were watching videos in the TV room. The kids’ shrill laughter sneaked under his door. He heard the baby crying, too, though that didn’t last long—probably just long enough for a diaper change. And every so often, he thought he heard the musical notes of Susan’s laughter, too.

It wasn’t that the noise disturbed him. It was more a case of his wanting to join the fun.

Now, that was a new one on him. Normally he didn’t care to be in any room where the women outnumbered the men, especially if he was the only man. Even among his own sisters he often felt awkward, inept and unnecessary. He’d served an important function for the family over the past few years—keeping food on the table and a roof over their heads. The rest he left to the womenfolk.

Then why suddenly did he want to be a part of the family fun?

Hell, he knew the answer. Susan. Ever since she’d come into his life, she’d disturbed his brain chemistry to the point he didn’t feel like himself anymore.

After a fruitless search of his hard drive for an article he’d written two years ago, Rand called it quits. He shut down the computer, then wandered into the TV room. The domestic scene that greeted him gave him an odd pull.

It was nothing he hadn’t seen before—kids and women. Shane and Emily were on the floor in front of the TV, engrossed in some cartoon. Penny was asleep on a blanket on his recliner, which was tipped back slightly so she couldn’t roll out. And Bonnie and Susan sat together on the couch, where Bonnie was apparently teaching Susan how to knit.

“What in the name of heaven is that supposed to be?” Bonnie asked, examining the product emerging from Susan’s needles. “You’ve got your knits and pearls all mixed up.”

“Well, I can’t tell the difference,” Susan groused. “I’m knitting-dyslexic.” This sent both women into peals of laughter. Rand wasn’t sure he got the joke, or if he did, it wasn’t that funny, but he enjoyed hearing them laugh.

Then Susan looked up and saw him, sobering immediately. “Uh-oh. Have we been too noisy? It’s your sister’s fault. She made me laugh so hard my tea almost came out my nose.”

“Really?” Shane piped in.

“I only told her that if any man had to depend on her knitting skills for a muffler, he would freeze to death.”

Rand perched on the sofa arm. “Good thing there are other ways to keep men warm.” Seeing the look on Bonnie’s face, Rand wanted to slap his hand over his mouth. He hadn’t really meant to say that aloud. His sister stared at him, her eyes wide, her mouth quirking as if she wanted to laugh.

Susan kept her gaze squarely on her handiwork. As she concentrated, the tip of her tongue peeked out from between her tightly pursed lips.
